I want to teach Sociology @ college level. I also want to be a librarian...any advice.

I know that the librarian takes a Master's in Library Science and I know that teaching sociology at a college level takes at least a master's in Soc. (for community college) and a PhD (at Universities). This schooling doesn't scare me, I love learning and I love knowledge and I love school. So I think I would enjoy these professions. Maybe during my summer months off of teaching I could work in libraries...or I could work as a librarian and just teach as an adjunct at a community college. Does this sound doable? I love both of these professions and I want to find a way that I could do both or satisfy both. I just need advice on how to go about doing this. By the way, I am in my second year in Undergrad. right now.

Thanks for your help.

  1.   I want to do the same thing but I am younger than you. I will have to get two masters degrees and a PhD.

I think it sounds really good:)

  2. You already know the answer.  You will need the schooling.  And it doesn't hurt to volunteer or get a low-paying job working in a library.  As a student, you may get the chance to be a teaching assistant.

The "both" aspect is a little harder.  It's not practical, I don't think, to be a librarian and a sociology professor.  At least, not to be a head librarian.  You may find that it's possible to, for example, get a job as a teacher at a small high school and also work in the library.

In other words, if you try to do both, you're not going to do a good job at either.

Since you're in undergrad, I suggest that you definitely get a job working in the college library (if not already).  You should also look for a TA or grader position, although that likely won't happen until you are a senior.

    Good luck.
