  1. Karate is a great choice, but consider self-defense courses. You or mom could even take it with her. The one I took was an intensive, two day course and by the end I was able to get two huge guys down on the ground and incapacitated. Your body remembers this stuff and it kicks in when you need it.

  2. My daddy always (to this day) if "big boys" pick on me to kick them in the nuts!! Works pretty good for me!

  3. any type of martial art is always good, because it not only teaches self defense but it also promotes discipline and control. I'd recommend boxing, because it provides an all around physical base for anything she wants to do later.

  4. Tae Kwan Do also teaches self-defense techniques: how to get free if you're grabbed, etc.  5 isn't necessarily too young to start some martial arts classes, it depends on the child and if she's able to pay attention and focus.  Some 5 year olds can, some can't.

If you inquire at some martial arts schools, they will usually let your daughter attend a couple of classes for free, to see how she likes it.

  5. They have self defense classes, check your local yellow pages.

  6. Tae Kwon do---there is, besides the physical part, a lot of training in developing the type of mind, which will make the physical aspects usually unnecessary.

  7. There are many types of martial arts.  Start with googleing it with your town/state.  A self defense class will probably be for when she is older but many martial arts start children as early as 3.  I personally like the teaching discipline and promoting being active.

  8. tyninja1...  that's not cool but I agree with the board any form of self defense would be great. I went through boxing classes and this helped in the Military. But its your choice just do it soon.

  9. My daughter and son started karate classes at the age of the terrible two's.  They stuck with it.  Both are black belts now and can defend themselves with a vengeance.

  10. you would've been the perfect dad for me growing up.  I wanted to learn martial arts when I was a kid but my dad said it's not for girls.

  11. My dad put the boxing gloves on my sister and me when we were 9 and 10. Neither of us picked fights, but we could end one in a hurry if anyone messed with us.

  12. It's a great idea and there is no reason to wait. She can join classes now. Check in your area for Karate or other martial arts classes for her age group.

  13. Tae Kwon Do is really good for self confidence and self esteem building.

  14. Boxing is a great sport.. I love it.
