I want to teach my four yr old son from home but im not sure where to start ? I know I am capable of doing it now but worry I wont be capable when he is older. As i was just an average kid at school with average grades.

Do I need to let the education board know i will teach him and where do i find resources? Im not sure where to start!

I would love to hear from other mum who teach from home.

Also would love to speak to another mum in southampton area ?

  1. Cheer up! You can do this.  You start out easy with your child and you will learn right along with him.  I am really old and I had to learn all over again to help my children.  It was exciting for me too.   The biggest hurdle you have to face is choosing curriculum.  There are so many different learning styles, philosophies and materials to choose from.  Keep looking for other homeschoolers in your area, they will be an invaluable resource.  There may be different ways to register your child with different benefits and requirements to maintain the legality of homeschooling where you live.  Try to find a store that sells educational materials, they will also be a resource.   Materials can also be purchased through catalogues.  Gather as much information as you can.   He is only four and you have a long road ahead of you to plan for.   Good Luck. Sorry I can't be more specific; I am in Canada and laws are probably different.   Remember. You can do this!

  2. Sounds like you are a Brit, so the American organizations won't help you much. Since I'm from the U.S. I don't know of homeschool organizations in your country, but I know there are some as I have met homeschoolers from your area online.

You don't have to be a whiz to teach your child- you will learn along with him! This year, I re-learned how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions, learned that atoms are colorless, and lots of other things! It is fun, and your child will enjoy spending time with his mum!

  3. It depends on your state.  I'm not aware of any state that has mandatory school for 4 yo.  So in that case know one needs to be notified.  Contact your local school district and they can give you specific answers.

Also, look for a homeschool coalition(group of parents) in your area.  They will know the laws and be able to advise you on good programs and materials.

  4. www.bubbabrain.com has good elementary math stuff, just the basics.

www.bubbabrain.com is always adding content...check it out

  5. I am not a mom but I am a kid who Homschools and from what I have done you realy need to find a cerukulim that fits you.  Also you will be able to teach your kid when he is older becouse when your kids gets older he can work more on his own.

  6. You will need to contact your school district, and they will send you forms to fill out. It differs from state to state, city to city, and school to school. So, I would start there. Good luck.

  7. Probably the living room.

  8. i really think u should let your child go to a public school. It would help him so much personally. What if u cant teach him the math when it gets hard. Then u start him in public school and he dont no nothing

  9. You will have to look into your state's homeschool laws here:

    http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp

However, there are typically no requirements for homeschooling a 4 year old as they usually do not fall under the age of compulsory attendance.

As for whether or not you will be capable when he is older, there are materials you can buy for every subject that will show you how to instruct him.  Statistics show that homeschooling is more successful than public school, even when the parent has not graduated from high school.  You just cannot beat 1 on 1 instruction that is tailored to the child.

Storytimes, park days and other outings will provide a good social outlet for your son.  You may also want to look for a homeschool support group in your area.

    Good luck!
