Question:

I want to teach myself contemporary dance?

I am a serious dancer, and starting this september I am taking 2 ballet lessons, a jazz/funk lesson, a modern/jazz lesson, a street dancing lesson, and a salsa dancing lesson. But my favorite dance ever is contemporary dance, and both of the dance studios I go to don't give contemporary lessons, or lyrical lessons. Please, please PLEASE give me tips on how to teach myself contemporary. I've watched videos from SYTYCD and on youtube, and I've done some improvising for contemporary dancing, but I don't think I'm really learning. Please help me!

  1. Oh yeah, you can teach your self contemporary but, things like pirouettes , and leaps, will take a GREAT DEAL of practice it might even take years for you to do them properly, and thats the challenging part, you might think you know what your doing and you might think your doing it right but you might be doing it all wrong. I suggest you go to a studio where they actually teach contemporary dance, instead of learning on your own, once again it IS possible, but you won't go as far as if you were in class.

  2. i agree you would probably be best off going to a studio, you might not be able to have the proper techniques but contemporary is very similar to modern and lyrical put together i find but that's just my opinion you may be able to do it but i really still suggest you take some classes in it.
