  1. Take a lot of money, phone ahead for reservations.

The school holidays have started, so it will be crowed in much of Italy.

A good guidebook will be needed, I like the Lonely Planet series, but there are others too.

If you book your first night stay you can take it from there, or you can book all your stays. But if you want freedom of travel but still know you have a place to sleep, phone the night before, or ask your host to phone for you when you get an Italian not speaking your language.

Almost all of Italy is worth visiting, so just roam around and enjoy wherever you end up.

To get to Italy, look for cheap flights, although many of those will not be cheap when you book so short before traveling in summer, but also look into the last minute offers your nearest travel agent has. They might well be much cheaper than anything you can get arranged at this short notice yourself.

  2. Buy a guidebook and work out an itinerary for the cities/areas you want to see.  Hard to give advice when we don't know your interests, the areas you want to visit, or what amount of time you will spend in Italy.
