Can you estimate how much ground transportation will be to see enough over a week or two? Aren't rail passes like $200?

  1. When I lived in Spain (five years ago) it was not that expensive to travel by train or bus, with the exception of the AVE high speed trains. Busses are the cheapest, I've found.

If you are there for a week or two, another thought is to rent a car. The upside is you can stop anywhere you want and take photos, visit stores, swim in a lake. The downside is that you will not be exposed as much to the locals and other travelers.

  2. thats awesome..alwys wanted to go there....ya they are like $250 or 300

  3. For buses try:

    and regional buses within spain:

  4. The best would be to pick the cities you want to see previously and then decide either train or car, because there are A LOT of places where train is not an option, especially smaller but typical  villages.

One week for both Portugal and Spain is nothing, both countries have a gigantic history, from pre-history to romans, moors, visigoths, medieval, renaissance... Virtually EVERY town, big or small in Portugal and Spain has a castle, meaning most towns in PT and SP are at least 700 years old.

Since I'm Portuguese, here's my suggestion of key-cities, from north to south:

    - Porto (city and surrounding areas especially for Port Wine)

    - Coimbra

    - Lisboa

    - Évora ( one of the best preserved UNESCO World Heritage Sites)

    - Algarve (a region really, most known for the beaches)

  5. The train company is Renfe and here is a link to the Renfe website in English. You will be able to work out costs & timetables on there.

    http://horarios.renfe.es/hir/ingles.html

I would travel by car if I was you. You can then get to places where the train doesn't travel. There is so much to see in the whole of Spain. It is difficult to advise you where to start and where to finish. For car hire check out this good website.
