Personal Campaign Travel - Exemption to Contribution Limit

When traveling on behalf of a candidate, an individual may incur up to $1,000 in transportation expenses per election, without such expenses constituting an contribution to the campaign.

“Traveling on behalf of a candidate” includes trips taken at the request of or in coordination with the campaign, including appearing as a surrogate for the campaign, working at a campaign office or participating in campaign activities.

The Personal Travel Exemption is only for transportation and does not apply to subsistence expenses. Individuals may pay for their own food and lodging while traveling on behalf of a candidate, and these payments do not count as a contribution to the campaign.

This is all I could find on it, I just want to know what I have to do to get it, is it something I can get going? To use on the trip? Or something I have to tax write off?

  1. It IS a tax write off.

    You dont get direct repayment.

And get and SAVE your proof.

  2. Are you officially working for a campaign?  If you are, then you should inquire with your campaign office manager.  If not, then you'll do it on your own dime.

  3. If you travel for a candidate you can spend up to $1000 of your own money without claiming it as a campaign contribution. After that it would be considered a campaign contribution and have to be claimed by the CANDIDATE as such. You are out however much you spend unless you work for the candidates election committee and they agree to cover your expenses.
