i'm an eighteen year old girl and i feel like i'm going stir crazy. i need to get the h**l out of here.

is travelling through europe by myself safe? what kind of preparations should i make, besides saving money? how much do you think it'll cost if i'm there for about a month? if you could even point me in the direction of a website that could help me, that would be great.

basically what i'm asking is, how do i go about doing this?

  1. Time to spread your wings then :0)

Basically the best way to go is backpacking and staying in hostels.  The advantage is that you will meet a lot of fellow back-packers and make new friends all over which share the same travel & exploration bug.  If you stay in hostels then it is a lot cheaper than package holidays, plus you have the flexibility to go where you want, when you want..... if you like somewhere then you stay a bit longer, if you don't then you move on.

To answer your questions.  Yes - if you stick to the main routes and use your common sense (e.g. watching your pack, passport wallet etc, not going down dark streets on your own, watching your drinks etc - basically same as you would do at home) then yes it's as safe as a night out in town at home.

    Preperations

    - basically read up!  There are many guides online for backpackers e.g. http://www.bugeurope.com/

    - have an idea about which countries you want to visit

    - make sure you get a good travel/medical insurance.

    - Depending on your nationality, check out which countries you may need to obtain a visa for.  If you are EU then you can travel within the EU freely.  Otherwise certain nationalities fall under the visa waiver program http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_Waiver... so if you hold a passport for one of these, then you can travel up to 90 days in these countries.  If none of these then you have to apply for a visa - typically a Schengen visa is the most common one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_ar...

The costs are something that I would have trouble advising you, it depends where you want to go and how you want to stay.  A nice site to check out hostel costs (which are going to be some of your biggest costs in addition to travelling) is http://www.hostelworld.com/.  It gives you customer ratings as well so you can get an idea of what you get for the price

Anyway, it is a brilliant way to get out there and a great experience.  I hope you have got a bit of an idea of what to do & I really wish you the best of luck.
