Anyone done that? Can you share your itinerary, how's and where's to stay, etc - I have a limited budget, travelling with hubby and 10 year old son. I have 12 days and would like to do it in November this year.

Thanking you in anticipation!

  1. I would simply say use www.travade.com for finding cheap travel.  If it is a flight your looking for, when you go to the home page, you will see below the flight search a tiny link that says 'International Flight Search', it is a little blue link.  For some reason those fare are always the cheapest around I feel.

If the site asks you to type something in a box, just type 'travade' and it will proceed.  This is a great site and I have found a lot of great deals on it.

  2. Doing the trip in the order you specified is best by train. There aren't any budget flights from Zurich to Florence. Air Berlin has flights from Zurich to Rome. Right now the economy prices run between 97 and 197 euro depending on the particular day and availability of seats. You'd have to check later in the year for November tickets. http://www.airberlin.com/site/start.php?...

There are a lot of options on the train during the day for trains to Milan and then to Florence with a train change. There are also a few trains that go all the way to Florence. One leaving Zurich at  7:42 am arrives in Florence at 2:32 pm. The standard 2nd class price is 90 euro. You childs ticket would cost 52 euro. There are usually some seats available at 19 euro, at waht's called the "Smart Price". http://www.trenitalia.com/en/promozioni_... It's too early to reserve tickets for November, but you'll want to reserve as early as possible to get this price. The other direct option is the night train leaving Zurich at 9:27 pm and arriving in Florence at 6:46 am the next morning. One advantage of this is that you can get a berth and sleep through the night. It's a little more expensive than a seat, but you're not paying for a hotel for the night. A 2nd class cuchette is 105 euro for the standard price (child 65 euro), but note that there are deeply discounted Smart Prices shown in the link above. I take this train when I go to Zurich, but I catch it when it stops in Bologna rather than in Florence.

You can research all the options for schedule and price at: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html for the Zurich to Florence and Florence to Rome trains.

For accomodations, the site I use is: http://www.venere.com/site/index.php?lg=... You select the city and dates, then you can narrow down the search to a particular section of a city on the map and sort by price, rating, etc. There are reviews by previous guests to use as a guide to selecting a particular hotel. I've used this site several times per year over the past 9 years for hotels in southern Europe and have never been disappointed with the result.

You might want to consider staying in a monastery or convent - some of them have pretty good deals. http://www.santasusanna.org/comingToRome... http://www.dolcevita.com/travel/convent/...

Note: the train schedules are adjusted in early June. There usually aren't big changes, but some prices and times are modified a bit.

  3. I would avoid going to Zurich, its very expensive to get from there to Florence or Rome.  The cheapest trains I have found are around 80 euro per person one way.  Trains from Rome to Florence are only 15.80 Euro each way for the slow train (3 hrs and 45 minutes).  Also, it is probably cheaper to fly into Rome than to Zurich.  Keep in mind also that if you really need to see Zurich, it will suck up about 8 hours of your travel time getting from there to Florence which is precious time you could use to see the sights.

As for the 12 days, you could easily just spend them in italy, dividing your time equally between Rome and Florence.  There are a loads of museums in both cities that are fantastic if that is your cup of tea.  Otherwise the countryside is beautiful.  Especially Tuscany.

Another great thing about Rome and Florence is that you can use them as bases for day trips to neighboring towns.  In Tuscany, you have to hit up Pisa, Lucca, Siena and San Gimignano at the very least.  That way you can mix up museums with beautiful countryside.
