  1. How long are you planning on travelling for? One thing you may wish to keep in mind is that if you fly via North America you can take 2 bags each weighing up to 23kgs each. Used to be 32kg each but this was reduced.  Air NZ is a really nice airline to travel on if you go via the USA. If you are on NZ1 from LHR to AKL via LAX then it is one of the few routes in the USA where you don't have to go through the whole customs and immigration rigmarole. You still have to do a bit, but not the full fingerprint etc. You simply sit and wait in the transit lounge. But, if you are on the other Air NZ flights via the US you would have to go through the whole process.

Or, go via San Francisco. You still have to go through the whole customs and immigration stages but it is a nicer airport to travel through.

However, if luggage limits aren't a concern for you, you may want to go via Asia. The Asian airports (especially Singapore!) are lovely. And, you may also be able to arrange a stopover which would be great.

Oh, check the flights from both Ireland and the UK. If you buy a ticket from the UK, just be careful as to your trip between the UK and Ireland. Last thing you want is a generous luggage allowance on your long flights but a really low allowance on your Ireland to UK flights!
