Question:

I want to try a birth control other than the pill?

I've been on the pill for almost 3 yrs now and would like to try something else. I want something I do not have to go to the doctor for. What are my options and how do they all work? One thing I've been thinking about is using spermicide. Do they make a lubrication that contains spermicide? Where can I get it? By the way I am married and we do not want to use condoms. Thanks.

  1. I would go with the NuvaRing, but you really do have so many options. The NuvaRing is a comfortable, flexible ring about 2” in diameter. You insert once a month. Once inside, it releases a continuous, low dose of hormones to prevent pregnancy. It is as effective as the Pill when used as directed, but you don’t have to take it every day. You leave NuvaRing in place for 3 weeks, then remove it for a 1 week ring-free period. You should get your period during this “week off.” (Using NuvaRing as prescribed, you will continue to be protected from pregnancy during the ring-free week.) Exactly 1 week after you take NuvaRing out, you insert a new one.

The only thing is you have to get a prescription from your doctor.

Spermicide alone is one of the less effective forms of contraception against pregnancy. I would not recommend using it without another form of protection.

  2. um well condoms are pretty much your only option well there is also spermicide which you can also get on condoms. that's pretty much all you get.

  3. a good thing i can think of is an implant, but sorry you do have to go to the doctor for it. A friend of mine has one, she said they just stick it in your arm with a needle and it lasts for 3 years.

I understand about the not wanting to use condoms thing too!

  4. I think the Nuva-Ring sounds like your best option. google it

  5. My husband and I used spermicide..it actually acts like a lubricant...they make foam and prefilled tubes of gel...but please..if you are going to do oral do it before you insert the foam or gel...as it doesn't taste to great...the also make suppositories and a sponge that is good for 12 hours....but please beware...I ended up pregnant...we were using the VCF foam...so you have plenty of options...just go to a drug store...
