I want to try boxing someday?

Boxing fascinates me.

I work out most everyday, but I want to go into a sport that incorporates all the training I do.

I'm a senior in highschool, so I was thinking of joining a boxing club in college.

Any boxers here that might offer me some insight?

  1. I'm no boxer, but if you box with the same amount of energy that you use to write poems, you won't have any problems.

  2. you can find a directory for boxing gyms on line for you area

  3. If you want to get the h**l beat out of you for a living, you go right ahead.

  4. Go for it.  Check with your local athletic commission or amateur boxing committee for a local club.  Some gyms have equipment to work on but don't actually have any fighters who participate in local/national tournaments.  It sounds like you don't want to just go hit a heavy bag but actually box.

Boxing is not like most sports, it takes more than just dedication to the gym every day......you also have to put in road work to building stamina (running, swimming, jogging, etc) and when it comes to tournaments you will need to monitor what you eat to make weight (like wrestling in high school).

We have a team who run between 2-6 miles a day each morning and come to the gym to work out every evening....They spar every week and that's when their is no upcoming bouts.  When it is time for a tournament, they run 2-6 miles every other day and the days they don't run long...they do rounds of sprints on the track.   They have to make weight for the fight and do it healthy so they don't get sucked out.   (unlike professionals who weigh in the day before they fight, amateurs weigh in the same day...so they don't get to put on 10 pounds before the fight).  Its alot of work, but it's very rewarding.  Right now the Golden Gloves tournaments are happening (in NY) and although I wouldn't suggest you try competing just yet....get into the gym and work...by this time next year you could be a novice boxer in next years Golden Gloves.

  5. Go for it.

Less people are hurt boxing than any other contact sport.

  6. Good choice, boxing is all about discipline, and you're never to young to learn how to box. The first few months are rough, but once you get the hang of it, it will be like second nature to you. Good Luck
