Like who should I contact, what do I provide (films, times??), when should I inquire, what should I expect - its a D1 school but its not a very competitve d1 school, more like d1 subdivision.

Im looking to try out as a sprinter (200m)

the team's top outdoor 200m times were 21.5-22.9. I can possibly run a low 23 right now, but in a year I should be in the 22 range.

oh I ran track in HS but posted sub-par times - ran as a distance runner, never ran a sprint event.

  1. Most schools take anyone remotely competitive. It basically costs them nothing. There's not enough people running track that would warrant most teams from actually having tryouts. Go to their web-site and contact the coach for your events. Let them know your interest in running there and give them your times, ask for training plans/routines.

If you run the 200M in college, you will most likely be running the 400M too, so get used to it now. Every college wants 400/4x400 men. If you can run the 200m in 22, you could be running 48-49 in the 400, which might get you some scholarship money.

  2. You need to contact the coach. Tell him you want to run and you are able to pay all of you own expenses.

They will usually let you train and even compete in meets if they have the space for you at the meets.

Since the school is not running fast D-1 times then you should be able to run.

  3. contact the coach (e-mail) and tell them that you want to run. Ask how walk-ons work and how you would go about the process.
