I have heard I need a "fire wall" cable. Where would I find one of those? Is that all I need? Do I need that?

Please help with all video related things :)

  1. If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

  2. It's "fire wire" cable and you can get it at an electronics store. Also, you will need some kind of video capture software to do this.

  3. OK, it's "firewire", not "firewall" (that's a security tool) and you'll need it if you've got a MiniDV camcorder.  If you have, you need a firewire card installed in your PC and a firewire cable to connect it to the camcorder.  You can get the cards and cables at any PC / electronics shop or buy them off the web.  A card should set you back about £12 / $20 and they're easy to install.
