I have a really fun Shitzu that I'd like to start volunteering with. I've decided to do volunteer work and I don't know where to start. I was thinking that my dog would benefit others in some way. I just can't figure out where to start. Any suggestions on how my dog and I can do some good volunteer work here in San Diego would be appreciated.

  1. The most common volunteer option including pets I have heard of is taking your pet to visit with nursing home patients, sick kids in children's hospitals, or kids living in shelters and children's homes (orphanages). The people in these places otherwise have no contact with pets, and it's no big secret that pets have a calming and therapeutic effect on people. These types of programs are usually done by humane societies or other such animal care groups, but you could always try to start one on your own.

  2. You will have to get him certified in that area but after you do you can take him to retirement homes, children's homes and hospitals with sick children ( especially the terminally ill ) they are all extremely happy to see the dogs and socialize with them. They usually can no longer have a pet and love the company.

  3. Contact your local humane society. Perhaps they can tell you if your dog needs to be certified to do this. They can maybe put you in contact with an organization that will help you.
