  1. Go to local nursing homes and talk to the activies directors.  You can go there when you want and just talk to poeple or do someones nails, or take someone for a walk.  Its gratifying and yet not something you HAVE to commit to long term.  You do it to fit your schedule!

  2. Hospice is a wonderful way to help an elderly person. As a volunteer you would take a couple of short informational classes. With a lot of guidance you would be out visiting a lonely elderly person. A 30 min. visit every 2 weeks from someone can add meaning to there existence. I have done it for 2 year now and believe me it is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. Don't be afraid just do it.

  3. Look for short-term assignments in your area at these web sites, which post opportunities with nonprofit organizations and some public sector entities (like schools):

    VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org

    Idealist, http://www.idealist.org

    Change.org, http://www.change.org

    CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com

    Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site, http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/

You want to find opportunities where you don't have to make a commitment of more than a few hours a month, where you don't have to sign on for many months, AND where the work sounds at least somewhat interesting to you. HOWEVER, even short-term commitments are *real* -- don't sign up for an opportunity unless you have made the time to participate and can meet your obligation, once set.

  4. I used to volunteer at a nursing home and I absolutely loved it in fact they had a job opening for an activities aide and that is where I now work!  Just talk to the activities director.  There are a million things you can do at a nursing or assisted living home.  Help with crafts, bingo other activities, paint nails, read to residents, visit with people, transport them to meals or the beauty shop, make bulletin boards, or do artwork, work in the snack shop . . . the list is endless.

  5. Look into your heart, you know what you would love to do and who you want to help.  If it is people, animals, what ever your heart desires, there are organizations that would love to have you onboard..
