I'm interested in volunteering in an african hospital and am from the UK, i have a biomedical science degree and may be willing to pay for my own flight etc, are there any organisations that can organise this kind of thing (it doesn't have to be just africa but it does have to be healthcare).

  1. Try Doctors without Borders.  You can also google medical mission and africa and will come up with various groups that plan trips each year.

  2. Have you looked into VSO?

  3. Check World Visions web site. They will cover you for housing and food usually but you must fly out. The site is a good one and explains areas, needs, projects, time periods and all. Good Luck. My son just started a year with the USA americorps and then wants to go to Africa to teach english for 6-8 weeks or more. We have relatives there too so it would be a doublle opportunity. I found there site to be good and they've been around awhile.

  4. Doctors Without Borders is great. You don't have to be an actual doctor in order to volunteer with them - just medical experience of some sort. Also, they pay for your flight and accommodation as well as a monthly stipend. My parents have two friends who've done it and have said it was the most amazing experience. One of them has actually returned once to do it a second time, and the other has gone on FOUR different trips with DWB. (Each one year long.) Obviously, they must be a great organization.
