I want to...well need to reformat my mp3 player

Ok how do i check if the file system is NTFS. My player turns on for about 5 seconds and says i need to reformat it to FAT 16 but i have no idea how to do that. I've fomatted it from the internal storage but it still says the same thing.. Pleas help me out here.
