“I want to win twenty major titles prior to my retirement”, says Federer
Born on the 8th of August 1981 in the city of Basel, Roger Federer is a professional tennis player from Switzerland. The twenty nine year old Swiss national, is currently ranked number three in the world by the ATP. He previously held the top world spot for a record period of two hundred and thirty seven weeks in a row.
As far as his 2010 major performances are concerned, the Swiss tennis maestro started off pretty well by winning the hard court Australian Open title after defeating Andy Murray in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6–3, 6–4, 7–6 (11). Federer then made his way to the final of the Madrid Open where he was defeated by the current number one tennis ace, Rafael Nadal, in a two setter clash.
At the clay court French Open tennis championship, the Fed Express couldn’t manage to make his way into the semi final of the major event after a period of six years. The right handed Federer was defeated by Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinal round at the grass court Grand Slam tournament in a total of four sets. The final match score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. As a result of his early exit from Wimbledon, Federer dropped in the world’s ATP rankings to as low as number three, after a period of seven years.
In a more recent interview, the Fed Express, who has currently reached the quarterfinal round of the ongoing Rogers Cup 2010 said that he wants to earn a total of at least twenty major trophies prior to his retirement. So far he has captured a total of sixteen Grand Slam titles in his career.
When commenting on his aim of grabbing twenty major titles Federer said that it was quite a practical goal to want to acheive. "After winning three majors per year on a total of three occasions and two majors on a  number of times, I don’t think that it’s something out of my reach”, he said. "I hardly participate in sixteen to twenty events per season, so I don’t get exhausted and that’s keep my motivation level high throughout the season”.
Federer surpassed Pete Sampras’ record of a total of fourteen major trophies at the grass court Grand Slam tournament last year. However, no one can deny the fact that he is not the same any more. The Swiss has not won a single major trophy since his hard court Australian Open crown at the beginning of this year.
However, Federer who is the father of one year old twin daughters, has refused to accept the fact that he has lost his charm.
"I give my hundred percent to each and every championship I participate as I don’t play in a lot of tournaments per year”, he told the reporters in a recent interview. “However, competitions like Rogers Cup as well as Cincinnati are also significant for me. As far as my motivation level is concerned, it is quite high for the next couple of years. And off course, if I manage to grab some more major titles that is going to be superb, however they are not my only goal”, he added.
While commenting on his age, the twenty nine year old Swiss admitted to the fact that his body takes more time to recover between the competitions. “Obviously you cannot expect my body to be the same as it used to be when I was twenty three. But I am happy as I know how to deal with it and I am doing a lot of physical exercise as well as practice in order to keep myself fit’, he said.
