  1. I work at a pet store now (just for the summer) and I love it. I called back in February asking if they were hiring, and they told me no. Being incredibly stubborn, I sent them my resume and cover letter anyway, and called to confirm that they got it. The manager said that yes they did, and he'd keep it in case they needed anybody. As it turns out, one of the girls quit in april, so they hired me on for the summer! Since I've been working there, I've accepted a whole bunch of resumes from people and most (but not all) have been HORRIBLE. Here are some tips I've learned:

    - Don't just hand in a resume that you've photocopied 7000 times. Get your resume, a cover letter tailored to that specific job, and put it in a neat addressed envelope. Make sure it looks proffessional!

    - Call and figure out what the manager's name is. It takes all of about 10 seconds, and it's so much better than 'to whom it may concern'. I had one resume addressed to "to whever Reads this" (all grammar and spelling how they wrote it). How terrible is that?! lol...

    - This may seem obvious, but use spellcheck! You wouldn't believe how many huge spelling/grammar mistakes I find in resumes. It's ridiculous! Have somebody look over your letter and resume before you send it just to make sure you and spell check haven't missed anything.

    - After you've sent the resume, call a week or so later to ask if they've recieved it and, if so, if they've had a chance to look it over. If you don't get the manager, keep calling. Sometimes messages don't get passed on to the right people.

Anyway, if you follow the above suggestions, I'm sure you'll top at least 70-80% of other applicants! Good luck!!!
