  1. well first of all im new to song writing too but ive written a couple pieces without and beat or rythm to it. but yeah i guess you can say im a lyricist. but first off youre gonna need basic tools... youre pen(cil) paper i prefer a notebook.... and cant forget your mind and heart

you need inspiration for a song. a song is a form of expressing feelings. express how you feel about something in a song

  2. I often find that having a good melody first goes a long way in writing a song.  The lyrics tend to be easier once I have a melody.  Write about what you know or feel.  Your songs will sound more genuine that way.  But don't ever try to force a song.  I guarantee you'll be dissatisfied with it.  You may be halfway through writing a new song and get stuck.  When that happens, you might need to walk away from it for a little while.  Coming back to it days, weeks, or even months later can give you a new and refreshing perspective on the song.  Some people may tell you a formula to follow, such as where to put verses or a chorus, bridge, etc.  If you feel inspired to write a song that way, then by all means go ahead, but don't feel like you need to do this every time.  Rather than thinking of music as a set of rules to be followed, see it as something like silly putty - yours to mold and shape into whatever you want.  Also, be prepared to throw songs away.  I've written plenty of songs that I thought were great when I first wrote them, but when I went back to them later, they just didn't have that spark.  Don't let that disappoint you.

And the most important thing about writing a song?  Have fun!
