First start by asking your parents and grandparents as much information about their dates and places of birth and those of their grandparents. Then try seaching for the generations before them in the registers of births, deaths and marriages and the census ruturns. You can do this online by joining a site like Ancestry (you can try it for a 14 day free trial). You could also do the searches at the Family Records Centre (if it's still open). You can get back to the beginning of the Victorian age through these sources. Prior to 1837 you have to search Parish records at your local authority records office. I recommend you buy a book on tracing your family tree, or borrow one from your library. It isn't difficult and once you've started you'll be hooked. I've traced mine back to c1540. Good luck!

Start with data you can get at no cost from family, local library, local court/register of wills/department of vital statistics, and the Social Security Death Index (has website). Also try typing  in ancestor's name in a search engine like Google or Yahoo.

At some point you will probably need more info than what is available there.  Check out roots.com and ancestry.com  which make various charges for various services.
