  1. The sub-domain must be associated with its own directory on your server. I have a web site at the domain afreshpath.com. If I want to have a sub-domain of newpaths.afreshpath.com, I will need to make a dedicated subdirectory for it under the root directory. After that, it is a matter of ensuring that your server is set up to direct traffic to the proper directory.

Since I use Yahoo (now ATT) hosting, they have this set up as an automated process. All I have to do is indicate what subdirectory it is supposed to use for the sub-domain.

Check with your hosting company about general setup of sub-domains and they will get you pointed in the right direction.

  2. You need to add the subdomains to your DNS server.  If you are hosting multiple domains on one web server, read the apache documentation on how to set up virtual hosts.
