  1. It really depends on how your kids learn.

A Beka is good, but honestly, my son hated it.  He did a lot better with unit studies and lapbooks while in early elementary, and is moving into lit-based research and some textbooks in jr. high.  We've supplemented all the way through with DVDs, computer based activities, and really great books.

How do your kids learn?  Do they like workbooks, or do they need a bit more freedom?  Do they love to read (or be read to), or would they rather explore and build?  Do they learn better by seeing, listening, or touching/doing?  These are all things to consider when choosing a curriculum.

Also - how much prep time do you have, as the teacher and parent?  Do you need something that is already scheduled and scripted out, or are you comfortable bringing resources together to make your own units?

There are literally hundreds of curriculum choices out there; what I would suggest is to get some catalogs and samplers, take a few days, and go through to see what would be of use for your family.  Here are some sites to check out:

Here are some of the best to get you started.  Without knowing more of the above info, it's really difficult to get more specific.  Hope that helps!

  2. my school uses ABeka books. its a really good curriculum. You have to believe me because this is coming from a student and not a teacher or a parent. lol. I've heard that ABeka is the most advanced home schooling curriculum there is, but thats up to you to decide, i guess. ABeka really challenges you and keeps you on you toes. My sister's in the first grade and instead of learning how to write in print, they teach cursive right from the start. you really should check it out!!
