I was put into foster care when I was 2. I finally met my real mother when I turned 18. I am 42 now. She died not soon after I met her and wasn't able to tell me much about my biological family. I really need to know more about my family, which in turn will help me learn more about myself! Does anyone know how I can research this on line for free?

  1. http://familytree.com/

  2. There are all types of websites, such as familytree.com, but if you really want an in-depth listing, you need to go to Salt Lake City and review the records of the Mormons.  They believe that when a person converts, they can save all members of their family, as well, so they keep very good records.  Some of these are on the web now, but it will take years to get everything on the web.  My great-aunt was able to find out that my family not only came from England, but the exact building that was their home, several anecdotes about the family, my great-great-great-great grandfather's complete service record in the Revolutionary War, and much more.

  4. I doubt that you can do it for free, but you may do it for a little cost. It rather depends where you are(you don't say). On-line, try www.cyndislist.com for a guide to records available. The best thing to do for starters is to read a beginner's genealogy book, and follow the advice given.
