  1. Go to http://www.AdopteeRights.net and click on "searching" then find your state and you can start the process to getting your non id. / state registry / reform group to get your OBC through active legislation. Your state may be one of the 6 that has access to their OBC's though too :)

What state was your adoption finalized in?

Louisiana!!! well hello there~!!!! MANY of us will be protesting our sealed records IN LA this July 22, 2008. If you feel strongly that adoptees deserve their original, unaltered birth certificates I urge you to come on over and join us in New Orleans!!!

This page will give you your laws and 3 links to LA search groups :)

Also, don't forget the http://www.isrr.net the worlds largest soundex reunion registry :D and its free!!

  2. I would check with the hospital where you were born if unknown you should check the county in which you were born courthouse both of those places have to keep all records. good luck

  3. Why do you want it?

  4. Gershom has given you some great advice.

    Also -

All the very best with your search.

  5. If it's their names your after, you don't necessarily need your original birth certificate. (I know I'm not answering the exact question, but I hope I might have information that will help you.)

This probably varies from state to state, but here's what I did to get my bio parents' names:  When I turned 18, I went to my county courthouse and asked to see my adoption records. I had to have a judge sign a release or something and they were given to me to look at. The records did contain my bio parents' names. Also, other information like height, eye color, a little medical history, etc.

In my case, the records were at the courthouse of the county I was adopted to, not born in (which seemed a little odd to me). Again, other states might do it different. You might also try to call your state capitol and see what you can get.

My adoption was closed (as opposed to open) and the records were sealed until I turned 18. In some adoptions, records may be permanently sealed. So a lot of this depends on your particular state laws, situation, etc.

This method will not get you your original birth certificate (at least it didn't for me), but it will get you names and some other identifying information, if it works the same as for me.

    Good luck with your search!

edit--in light of the first poster's links, it doesn't appear to work the same way in LA. Anyway, good luck again.
