My uncle says I am German because I was born there. But does being born somewhere make you German born for example. My grandmother is German & was born in Germany.

  1. Most countries Germany included could care less where you are born. You inherit your citizenship from your parents not your place of birth.

  2. In a legal context, I think both

  3. Keep asking the same question and maybe you will get the answer you want.

  4. Gertish

  5. You are German born because you were born in Germany, you are of German heritage because your grandma was German, you are a British citizen because your parents are British.

What do you feel you are?  I think it mostly depends on where you grow up.  Where did you grow up?

I have a niece who was born in Sweden because her parents lived there at the time. She doesn't remember living there and she never considers herself Swedish and I don't think anybody else would either.  She was born there but never really lived there and doesn't even speak the language.  Isn't your uncle just teasing you?

  6. You're British by Descent (as your parents were British and got their British citizenship by being born there http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/britis... ).

Your grandmother is unable to pass down German citizenship because it could only be tranmitted down the male line for those born before 1975 (which I presume your relevant parent would fall into this category, unless they were illegitimate).

"German nationality is acquired by descent from a parent who was a German national at the time of the child’s birth. A person may be a German national even though he or she has never held a German passport if one of his or her parents were German at the time of his or her birth. Therefore, in order to find out whether a person whose ancestors were German has acquired German nationality by birth, it is necessary to establish whether German nationality has been “passed down” to that person through the family members linking him or her to the German ancestor. For this purpose, it must be shown that each “link in the chain” was German at the time of birth of the next family member." http://www.london.diplo.de/Vertretung/lo...

  7. you have a mix of german and british blood

you are british because both parents and geman due to you grandmother and where you were born

  8. Legally you are British, not German.

  9. You're British unless you have German citizenship. You don't automatically get citizenship in the country you were born in, unless your parents are citizens of that country.
