Can I check "white" if I ever have to check out a "race" box in USA / Canada???

  3. Unless you're of caucasian descent, no.  Your last name is irrelevant.  

    My parents immigrated to Canada from Japan 10 years before I was born.  I was born and raised in a prairie city among non-Asian peers.  My native language is English.  I know less about Japan than most people I meet.  I'm married to a caucasian man.    

    No matter how "white" I feel, I will never be able to check that hypothetical box.  

    You can be proud of who you are no matter what boxes you check on a form.  Best of luck to you.
