I was born in Japan but moved to the U.S. does that make me Issei ?

If your parents are Japanese and you have or had Japanese nationality, then yes, you are technically Issei (first generation).

But Issei is a kind of historical term used for those immigrated before WW2.  These days with people moving much more freely between countries, the term is no longer used.

Yes. An issei is a first generation Japanese..Next comes nisei, and then sansei.

In case you have Japanese nationality, and then you legally emigrate to U.S.A.

I think you are  issei.
