  1. No, neither country is part of the European Union. You could only have one passport -- the one that is your registered country of birth. If registered in NZ then you are a Kiwi, if registered at the Australian High Commission, then you are an Australian.

    Edit:

    Sorry, I read Austria as Australia. Yes, the answer is that if you have been registered at the Austrian Embassy/Consulate you may be eligible for a EU passport, but if your birth is registered in NZ then you are a Kiwi and are only eligible for a NZ passport.

  2. You maybe eligible for an EANU passport!

  3. Walter B: Austria is a member of the European Union since 1995!

    Why don't you call an Austrian Embassy/Consulate in New Zealand to find out? That's the easiest and most reliable source.

  4. If at the time of your birth your parents were married, or they got married at some point after your birth, then you are entitled to Austrian citizenship, regardless of where you were born. However, as your father is the Austrian, if they were not married, or did not marry at a later stage, then the matter is more complicated and you will need to make further enquiries at an Austrian embassy/consulate. Had your mother been Austrian, then it would not matter if your parents were or were not married.

    As an Austrian citizen you are entitled to an Austrian/ European Union passport.

    As regards dual citizenship, it is almost always the case that a person who applies for Austrian citizenship must give up their existing citizenship. However, there are exceptions and, in your case, because you were born in New Zealand, your mother is a New Zealander, and you acquired New Zealand nationality at birth, you will be allowed to retain dual nationality.

    There are no Austrian embassies in New Zealand but there are consulates in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch. I would advise you to contact one of them to have the above confirmed.

  5. Austria does not allow dual nationality, only if it benefits the country,such as in the governor of California,

    you would have to forfeit your other nationality;
