I love that, yes you literally are an american of african descent. You could be the first white person to get a minority scholarship. I can see it now you could use affirmative action to get what ever job you want after all how many white african americans can there be?

Of course you are. Some might try to deny it but it's your hyphen so wear it if you want to. Not all Africans are black.

A lot of people think you have to be black to be African American and that if you are black then you must be African American. An Irish friend of mine is never done explaining when she visits that she is black and Irish - just like Guinness.

You are an African-American, not an African American. Native born Americans will only see a White person though. Why? Because we are conditioned to see things and people in Black and White only.

As far as I'm concerned...yes. You were born in South Africa, and thus hold citizenship there. You're now an American citizen. You've lived in both places. Legally, in my opinion, you should be African-American and are welcome to the hyphen.

Unfortunately, most people won't look past you being white and will deny you the term African-American and insist you call yourself Caucasian.
