  1. you will loose your SA citizenship because Belgium does NOT recognize dual citizenship:

    BELGIUM,so? your mother may not know? she does not have Belgium citizenship if she took SA citizenship..........

    CITIZENSHIP: Belgian citizenship is based upon the Code of Belgian Nationality, dated June 28,

    1984, and amended January 1, 1992.

     BY BIRTH: Birth within the territory of Belgium does not automatically confer citizenship.

     BY DESCENT:

     Child born in Belgium, at least one of whose parents is a citizen of Belgium. This same

    rule applies for an adopted child.

     Child born abroad, at least one of whose parents was a native-born citizen of Belgium.

    #Parents have up to five years to register child.#

     CHILDREN OF IMMIGRANTS: Citizenship may be granted when:

     Child is born in Belgium to non-citizens who were also born in Belgium.

     Child is born to non-citizens who have lived in Belgium at least 10 years before the birth of

    the child and who have filed a citizenship claim for the child.

     Child born in Belgium, who has resided there continuously since birth, may make a

    declaration of Belgian nationality between the ages of 18 and 30.

     BY NATURALIZATION: Belgian citizenship may be acquired upon fulfillment of the following

    conditions: Person is at least 18 years of age and has resided in country for at least 5 years.

    # DUAL CITIZENSHIP: NOT RECOGNIZED.#

    Exception: Belgian children born abroad, who received the citizenship of country of birth, may

    hold dual citizenship until age 18.

    LOSS OF CITIZENSHIP:

     VOLUNTARY: Voluntary renunciation of citizenship can only be made if the person holds

    another citizenship or acquires it at the time of the declaration. Renunciations may be sent to

    the nearest Belgian Embassy.

     INVOLUNTARY: The following are grounds for involuntary loss of Belgian citizenship:

     Person voluntarily acquires foreign citizenship.

     Person, born abroad and not in the service of Belgium, who lives abroad from age 18 to

    28, without making a declaration of citizenship.

  2. I think so yes but i can also advise you to check with Belgium embassy in South africa, im sure they will help.

  3. yup

  4. In general, to obtain Belgian citizenship you must either have been born in Belgium OR have a Belgian father. (Mother's citizenship does not count, in most instances).

    Determining which rules apply is dependent on when you were born - and, possibly, whether your mother was a Belgian who accepted South African citizenship or the other way around. (If she acquired SA citizenship second, she automatically lost her Belgian citizenship when she did so.)

    If you were born outside of Belgium before 1 January 1967, you are a Belgian citizen if:

    - you are the legitimate child of a father who is a Belgian citizen OR;

    - you were born out of wedlock and were acknowledged by your mother who is a Belgian citizen before you were acknowledged by your father.

    If you were born between 1 January 1967 and 31 December 1984 you are a Belgian citizen if:

    - you were born in Belgium to a Belgian citizen OR;

    - you were born abroad as the legitimate child of a father who is a Belgian citizen OR;

    - you were born abroad to a mother who is a Belgian citizen and who was born in Belgium or in Belgian Congo before 30 June 1960 or in Rwanda or Burundi before 1 July 1962.

    If you were born after 1 January 1985 you are a Belgian citizen if:

    - you were born in Belgium to a Belgian citizen OR;

    - you were born abroad AND:

    1. your Belgian parent was born in Belgium or in Belgian Congo before 30 June 1960 or in Rwanda or Burundi before 1 July 1962 OR;

    2. your Belgian parent was born abroad and makes a declaration, within a period of five years following your birth, requesting that you be granted Belgian nationality. This declaration (declaration d'attribution/toekenningsverklaring) must be submitted to the Belgian embassy or consulate in the main place of residence of your Belgian parent abroad. If the parent lives in Belgium, they should contact the registrar in their municipality. You obtain Belgian nationality on the date upon which the declaration is made.

    - OR you were born abroad and your Belgian parent who was born abroad does not submit a "déclaration d'attribution/toekenningsverklaring" within a period of five years following your birth but you were not given another nationality before you turned 18. However, if you were given another nationality before you turned 18, you lose your Belgian nationality.
