i was convicted of a felony in 95. i havent been in any kind of trouble since then. my job is sending me to japan can i get a passport

I know of no 1st world country that will grant a visa to a convicted felon

You can easily get the passport. However, you will not be able to travel overseas on the visa waiver program. You will need to apply for a visa to whichever country you visit no matter even if your visit is only for tourism purposes. You will also be required to disclose your felony when you apply for a visa.

Phoenix: Getting a passport isn't a right it's a privledge. The government can withold it for a felon especially if they were convicted of fraud or if they were out on parole and were a flight risk.

Depends on the offense. You may be able to get a waiver and get a passport but it won't matter.  Virtually no country will allow you to enter even for a visit.  Your conviction information will be in the bar code they swipe and they will say "thank you, goodbye" at the border.  You won't get out of the airport except on a plane back home.  I you even have a DUI, for example, you cannot go to Canada.

EDIT;  Pheonix...YES being convisted does deprive you of rights by due process.  A convicted felon cannot own a firearm, cannot vote in many states, and there are tons of other "rights" and privileges.  A passport is not needed to leave the country but it is needed to enter another.  If the USA was issuing passports to felons our neighbors in the world would not like it.  Americans enjoy the freest travel privileges of any country, it is because we do not issue passports to felons among other reasons

Well, I never heard that being convicted for something can deprive you of one of your basic civil rights such as the right to get a passport to leave your country! that is, if you served your time.

But you may have a problem getting Visas for other countries.
