  1. It would have been a fly mask - similar to this -

They are made of fine mesh and the horses can see through them but the flies can't get in to irritate their eyes.

  2. I heard it's so they dont get distracted/scared if they are near cars and other objects.

  3. It was an insect/fly cover. If you were to look closely you would have seen it was almost a mesh so that the horses could still see through it. Bugs like flies and mosquitoes love the "eye goobers" around a horse's eyes, so the cover keeps the horse from being bit.

  4. First that's not a question...Second if both eyes are covered the horse isn't going anywhere....More than likely the horse had something on that wont let him/her see to the side...like cars so it won't freak out on the road....

Then again I could be wrong...

  5. It's to keep the fllies/ bugs out of their eyes.

  6. Fly patches keep out bugs but they are transparent, the horse could see just fine.

  7. You probably saw a horse with a flymask on. Did it looks similar to this - http://www.kensingtonproducts.com/images...

Some people put fly masks on their horse's to keep bugs from going onto their eyes. Fly masks are transparent, the horses could still see perfectly fine.

  8. Blinkers. Blinkers look like this and keep the horse focused when riding or driving on the road. http://www.jockeysite.com/jphotos/fotos/...

  9. if it was a carriage horse, it may have been blinders (go on the bridle so the horse doesn't get freaked out by stuff it sees in peripheral vision...or if was a horse in a pasture, it may have had a fly mask on.

  10. Was it a fly mask? Like this? http://www.123tack.com/winning/product.a...

Used to keep the bugs off a horse's face.

  11. its called a fly mask to keep the flys out of there faces

  12. It can calm them.  If they're in an enclosure it doesn't pose any threat.  If they're in pain or have had a medical treatment or are about to - this can be helpful to keep them from getting too riled up.

  13. Could have been blinders. They are to keep the horse looking straight ahead and not everything else around him.

  14. whhaaat?

  15. I saw this recently and asked about it at the farm we were visiting.  Its probably a bug shield.  From a distance, it looks like the eyes are totally covered (and it looks really cruel!), but its actually a screen that keeps bugs out of their eyes.  It makes the horses much more comfortable during bug season.  They can still see out of it.

  16. They aren't actually fully covered, they are called blinders and keep the horse calm when things that may spook them are around, such as in your case fast cars driving by.
