Question:

I was emergency taxed years ago...?

Around 4-5 years ago, I worked part-time and took a year off to work elsewhere but never working 2 jobs at the same time. I then went back to the first job for 5 weeks and was put on an emergency tax code for some reason. I never kept any documents to show my pay and am unsure how to claim it back. I'm British & never been off work for anymore than a week. I think I am owed around £300 so it would be great to get it back but what are my chances. I am now in a new job and get paid correctly. I don't know if I even received a P45...a bit rubbish eh?

Anyway, thanks in advance.

  1. You can reclaim income tax back up to 5 years in arrears and the government and HMRC is changing this soon so you should apply as soon as possible. Hopefully you have kept all payslips as you need to fill in earnings but don't need to send actual payslips. The form to fill in can be downloaded from www.hmrc.gov.uk

    How to reclaim PAYE overpayments - previous years

    Write to your Tax Office and include any relevant documents about your earnings during the tax year for which you're claiming, such as:

        * P60, P45

        * information about your employment and benefit history

    They will look into your query, work out how much we owe you and send you a refund in the post .

    The time limit for making a claim is no later than 31 January five years after the end of the tax year (5 April) in which the overpayment was made. For example, a claim for the tax year 2002-03 ending 5 April 2003 must be made by 31 January 2009.

    The form is at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/r40.pdf
