I was given a lawnmower, but it won't start. I can pull the cord, but its pretty tight. There is gas in it. I

opened the oil compartment, and the oil is pretty thick, should it be? What could be wrong with it? Please help, I'm growing a jungle!!!:)

Double check and make sure that the gas is not stale. Then check the spark plug, to sure it is firing. Take look at the filter and clean it off if needed.

Drain the gas, replace the spark plug. Fill the tank 1/4 full with gas. If you can get it to start, run it for 5 minutes and then drain the oil and replace it.

I would change the oil, oil filter, air filter, gas and spark plug. If it is real tight when you pull the cord it could be that someone tip the mower over and got oil in the cylinder. To fix this pull the cord with the plug out, it will push the oil out the plug hole. After changing all the above spray starter fluid in the carburetor. This will get it to start. let it run in high to burn any oil out of the cylinder.

The oil shouldn't be thick. Are you using the right  oil? Try using two-stroke cycle. if that doesn't work take it to a mechanic shop.
