I was gonna compress my file system will this change anything or the way I use the files?

it will slow down the speed at which your computer accesses those files. Once the files are compressed the computer has to decompress the files before it can do anything for them.

You should only do that if you are desperately low on hard drive space and can't by a larger hard drive. Or perhaps if the drive is only for archiving purposes and you don't plan on accessing the files any time soon.
