I was sideswiped by a bluish-green truck last night and both of us came to a halt sideways on a 2 lane bridge. When we both stopped I started to get out and call the cops, but when I looked over at the other truck, he was busy throwing Budweisers in the bushes. Then he took off!!! I tried to catch up and get a lisence plate number, but the $%&! got away! So here I am a day later with no info on the guy who his I am reporting this to my insurance. I just have this bad feeling that I am gonna get a royal s***w job here. My car was a 99 Toyota Tacoma with about 130000 miles. I think I am probably gonna get a check for what I owe on it. Where should I go from here?!?!?

  1. Not much you can do, file a report with the cops, provide them with a description, but they probably won't do anything anyway.

  2. Since you were unable to get the other party's info, you obviously need to file a claim against your own Collision Coverage.   If your vehicle is repairable, and if the damage does not exceed roughly 75% of the Actual Cash Value, your insurance will pay for the damage less your deductible.

If the vehicle is totaled, you will be offered the ACV less your deductible.  You will not get a check for what you owe on it. If you owe more, you will be responsible for the difference.

  3. When people have unrealistic expectations, they get screwed in the end.  If your damage is severe, your vehicle could be a total loss.  Don't assume that it is, don't be surprised if it's not.  If the vehicle is not totaled, you repair it.  If it is totaled, your vehicle is probably not worth what you think it is.  If your truck shows signs of wear and tear, you will not get top dollar.

Also, different insurance companies use different percentages when figuring a total loss.  My company goes by 80% of the ACV.
