Question:

I was in my garage, and saw a large yellowish flying insect with a LONG! tail or stinger perhaps. What was it?

The insect wasn't that large, but this long, wirey thing was probably three inches long. It could have just been a twig, but it looked more like a tail or a stinger. I'm wondering if I should be concerned. (By the way, it didn't look at all like any bee or wasp species I have ever seen. I live in Missouri, and it's summer and hot.)

  1. It sounds like you are describing a some type of wasp.  There's a great site I found a long time ago and refer to all the time.  It's called "What's that bug".  If you can get a picture they will help identify it.  Otherwise you'll have to browse around.

  2. Id call it a Banana bug.

But it sounds like a wasp [maybe it was just born yellow], or a bee.

  6. Sounds like an ichnumon (sp?) wasp. What you see is called an ovipositor, or an organ designed for egg laying. They lay eggs into a caterpillar and they hatch and the larvae eat the caterpillar while it is still alive.

There are many kinds of ichnumon wasps living in the USA.
