Basically my girlfriend owned our car and insured it under her name. I was insured as an additional driver. We have now split up but she transferred the car ownership into my name. I am still insured by her existing policy?

  1. Most likely yes, but I would check with the insurance company just to be sure.

  2. No, you are no longer covered under her policy as she no longer owns the vehicle.  Get your own insurance policy immediately and do NOT operate the vehicle (or even keep it on a public road) until you do so.

  3. I would think so.  Call the insurance company to find out what you need to do for now.  You are probably still covered until that policy runs out and you will probably have to get your own policy.

My insurance company put me on my parents when I was a teenager.  They are on the insurance of whatever I drive.  I am now 40 and my mother has passed away 8 years ago and my father has different insurance.  I have told my insurance company many times and they are still on it.

  4. you have to change ownership with the insurance company, no your not

  5. You would still be insured. Although it would be smart to get your own insurance. Simpler that way

  6. No.

Now that you own the vehicle, you must have your own insurance.  Her insurance will stop when she sells the car, regardless of who it was sold to.

  7. no, get the insurance in you name

  8. Why are you asking us?

We are not the insurance company.

We don't even know who the insurance company is, and we certainly don't know how the policy was written up.

Contact the insurance company and ask them.

  9. No. You must establish insurance in YOUR name with YOU as the owner.  And no, it is not likely that there will be any sort of refund forthcoming on the original policy.

  10. No. But ring the same insurance company asap and get a cover note put in your name until you can do all the paperwork. This should be easier to arrange since you are already named on the policy. But if you have an accident today or tomorrow or if it is stolen they will use the title transfer as their excuse to not pay out.

Your girlfriend may be entitled to a partial refund of the policy if she paid annually and there were still several months left. Ask the insurance broker when you get your cover note.

  11. Change it to your name. If you are the title holder, the insurance needs to be in your name.
