I was involved in a hit and run and the insurance agent called two months later with a claim, what do I do?

I left the scene of an accident two months ago, I know it was stupid, and I regret it. My insurance agent called and reported a claim that someone saw the accident and wrote the plates, but the driver was unknown. Can I just go through insurance now, since there was no police report and pay for the damages without getting the law involved?

  1. You had your chance to keep the insurance company out of this by NOT leaving the scene.

But, since you pay for insurance, this is the time to let it work for (or really against) you!

  2. Seems to me you have no choice but to use your insurance unless you are willing and able to pay for everything yourself.  I'm betting though that either way, the law will be involved

  3. Your premiums will definitly go up.  You might want to check if you are in trouble with the police.  If that person reported you to the police, well it is illegal to leave a scene of an accident and it is failure to give information.  Less than two weeks ago, some one rear-ended me and left.  He got caught by the police right after he hit me and he got arressted and got multiple tickets.  I would check into all angels....Just so you know, don't leave the scene ever again, it is not worth it and it is very horrible for the other person involved.  The person who hit me didn't even know if I was hurt or if I was pregnant or had any medical problems.  Stop and think before you act next time.

    Good Luck!

  4. If your agent knows about it, then someone else (almost certainly the person whose car you hit) has already reported it to your insurance. Call your agent back and explain what happened. Most likely the owner of the other car just wants your insurance to pay for the damage.

You may get a ticket if the owner reported it to the police, and your rates may go up, but you just have to take your lumps. It's not as bad as worrying about it.

  5. That was dumb! You will get sued!

  6. hopefully you'll get SCREWED!

  7. You have no choice, if you had liability coverage on your policy at the time of the accident and it's turned in to your insurance company they decided if they are liable to pay or not. You will pay nothing directly if the insurance handles it, but your premiums will likely go up or worse they could cancel your policy depending on how many claims you have had.
