  1. yup, weights on the opposite side of the die of the number you want.  some can be adjusted on the fly by an experienced hustler.  they can dislodge and reset the weights where they want them inside the dice.  this is done by jerking the die a certain way (which they make look like the normal shaking of the dice).

if you suspect someone has loaded dice, simply offer to trade yours for theirs and watch them sweat!

i was playing backgammon for money once in jamaica and knew full well that the guy had loaded dice (rolled funny and one almost always landed on six).  i asked if we could switch and he just about went pale (tough for a jamaican).  he refused and i said ok and kept playing (only for $2, and he was a nice guy besides being a cheater and needed the money more than i did).  the next game i said let's just play for fun and he said ok so it ended amicably and i had to pay $2 for entertainment and a good story.  not bad.

  2. The two main ways to rig dice are to weight them unevenly and to make the faces different sizes.  Weighting them differently means using a more dense substance in the volume opposite the number you want to roll, so that volume winds up on the bottom and the face you want winds up on top.  Making the faces different sizes is perhaps less noticeable, because they'll look the same size to the naked eye.  By making the sides you want to come up slightly bigger in area, those sides will land more often.  However, most dice are designed to have the highest and lowest numbers on opposite sides.  By using this method, you'd want to put the 5 and 6 on opposite sides and make those faces the largest, if you were going for high numbers for example.  Because of this, this isn't usually used to rig dice, it just happens thanks to poor production values.

  3. The rigged dice are filled with things, usually mercury. This allows the die to tilt to the number you wanted, simply by shifting the mercury to one side. For ex. if you want a 6, hit the die on table or something with 6 at top. Throw the die and it will land on 6. Awesome isn't it? cheating...........

  4. They are made with weights in them so that they roll out the right number to win.
