have to be in their uniform the entire day? 2) Are they free to do what they want in the civilian world on weekends, or do they not get free time on weekends? 3.) For those not living in the barracks, what time do they have to report for duty and g home each day?

Yeah yeah yeah, these questions might sound dumb, but i love the specifics about military life. :)

  1. Duh

  2. 1)have to be in their uniform the entire day?

    Yes, they are in uniform the entire work day. From the time they start work till they are released for the day they are in uniform.

    There are some special days they don't have to wear their uniform to work. For example, FRG (Family Readiness Group) fundraisers where the soldier pays a small fee and can wear civilian clothes to work.

    2) Are they free to do what they want in the civilian world on weekends, or do they not get free time on weekends?

    Free time depends on what job they work. MPs do have to work on the weekends sometimes. And there are times where a soldier may have nights or weekends; such as CQ.

    But yeah, I think, for the most part, they are free to do what they want and go where they want. However, they can't do certain things if they are under restrictions, things that would break the UCMJ, etc.

    3.) For those not living in the barracks, what time do they have to report for duty and g home each day?

    The work times depends on the job, but they have the same time schedule as the ones in the barracks.

    0600: My hubby goes to PT in the morning; comes home for breakfast and to change into his uniform;

    0900: goes to work;

    1130 am (1200 on Mondays) - 1300: comes home for lunch; then back to work;

    1700-1800 or later: then comes home after work (and sometimes he is has to work late, he might come home for a quick dinner but then he's back to work till he gets released)

  3. 1. Airmen must be in uniform during their duty hours.  Outside of that they are free to be in their civies.

    2.  Outside of their duty hours they do as they please, as long as it is not illegal or does not bring dishonor to the military.  Some just hang out on base, others get involved in community organizations, go out with friends, etc.

    3.  For anyone who is active duty, it depends upon their job.  There are some jobs that are strictly 8 - 5, like normal office hours.  Then there are folks whose day starts at 6am.  Others who work Swing shifts (evening) and Mid shifts (nights).  So it varies.  It also depends upon how busy they are.  DH is usually at work by 7, and gets home around 6.  If it's a slow day he might be home at 5.  He's currently getting ready for an inspection, so as it get closer he'll work longer.  Soon he'll be at work by 6 am and not home till 6 pm or later.  And they'll be even longer when the inspection team is here!

  4. Well, you only live on base when you are Active duty, for the most part.

    1) Yes, from the time you are in morning formation to the time your work day ends, usually around 4-6pm you are in your camouflage utility uniform or "cammies" as they are referred to in the Marines.

    2) You are free to wear what you want on the weekends and do what you want on the weekends provided you do not break any laws or any specific orders by your chain of command.  For example, at one of my duty stations, you were only on liberty on the weekends until 5pm Sunday.  All personnel in that unit HAD to be back at the base by 5pm.  Usually, you are free to do what you want until Monday morning formation.

    3) No one lives outside the barracks unless they are married or are of a sufficient rank to live off-base.  Usually they are E-5's and above who have been in at least 1 or more term of enlistment, depending on what service they are in.  They go home every night like the barracks bound personnel and have to be back in the morning in formation just like the other personnel in their unit.

    Hope this helps!

  5. I was in the army, lived on base, and didnt wear ACUs or BDUs (army uniforms) for two years.  I worked in a hospital and wore civilian clothes to and from work, and the hospital scrubs while I was at work.  Anytime I wasnt working (I did 12 hour shifts) i had free time.  Since I did live in the barracks, they did still have random room inspections, but if I had the day off and was in my room, they would just leave.

  6. In the military your work day ends when they call liberty. Liberty starts at the end of your work day and goes until the beginning of the next work day. You can change your clothing at work or you can drive home and change. The only exceptions are that there are certain uniforms not allowed to be worn out in town. In that case you'd change at work. (Navy coveralls are one example)

    Most uniforms can be worn out in town to do normal errands, pick up kids at daycare etc, but the requirement is to be an upstanding citizen when in uniform in view of the public.

    On liberty you do what you want when you want to in accordance with the laws of course. You can go to a bar, out to dinner etc and have a drink, go to the mall etc. Your free time is yours. You would do all this in civilian clothing because no one wants to wear their uniform any longer than necessary.

  7. No. At the end of the work day, they line up in formation and get a briefing. After that, they are free to go and get changed into civilian cloths, unless they have to pull guard duty. If it's Friday, they don't have to show up till Monday at 6:00 A.M.
