I was just wondering... what gives a painting attitude?

Question

I am painting a self portrait for my school certificate and i have worked out what makes me like a painting... Attitude and pop art styles.

so i was wondering what gives a painting attitude.... examples...?

Being a self portrait....that takes care of subject matter, but could work on pose & composition.

The  rest comes from boldness of  ( or lack of ) color & brushswork.

An  old teacher would have us sketch or paint the same subject in different ways to show "mood".

Remember him saying " get mad...show some attitude".

Well I think that a painting should  express who you are. Do not try to copy someone else's styles because that is not you. I also like paintings that are not quite complete. I mean they are complete but I don't like it when they just look like a picture. It must use peoples imaginations to complete the feeling and mood of the painting. I hope you get what I mean coz it is a very creative and skilled way to paint! lol!

A painting is all about the personality of the painter.  In really successful paintings the personality of the person behind the brush really shows through.  When people begin to paint they have to discover their own style.  I've just done that and it feels great to be able to express myself in this way.

It's one thing for you to have attitude, but it's another for your work to have it. If you want your work to speak for itself with attitude than it should be able to show it without you saying a word.  If you want pop attitude u could stick with bold, contrasting colors. Check out Andy Warhol... amazing pop artist (my fav, besides the famous marilyn's. I saw a few originals and wow! There were these awesome paintings of high heeled shoes. Huge! And made of diamond dust)... and a bigger piece might add to the intensity of what you are trying to get across. You could also check out Robert Rauschenberg and Roy Lichtenstein. Good luck!
