John Garland married in Howden,Yorkshire. His volume is 9d page 156. I was suprised to see 3 entries up an entry for a Caroline Elizabeth Churchill, her surname was Garland like my ancester. Her district was Hanover Sq (middlesex,I believe) It got me to wondering who she was? I dont suppose the name "Churchill" would have meant anything to anyone in 1856,and why did she have the surname Garland? Does anyone know anything. By the way. This question replaces my previous similar one, which I made a mess of due to lack of time Thanks

  1. It still is not unusual for children to be given their mother's maiden name or another family name.

  2. if you are looking at the indexes from findmypast or a similar website then it is the index for the whole country and obviously garland was her maiden name

  3. Because Garland was her parent's surname.

They were probably related to the Churchill family and it's not uncommon in England to have a "family name" as a "middle name"

  4. Sometimes the mother's maiden name, or even the surname of someone from an earlier generation, was added as a Christian name, or, if the child was born "out of wedlock" and the mother never married the father, the father's surname was often added as a Christian name. Aside from the Churchill we all know of, Churchill is quite a common name, they are not all related.

  5. Not sure what your question is, but I doubt that there is any significance in the names.  Churchill is not uncommon in England - like Thatcher, Brown, etc, etc...  I suspect there's a more than a few Garland as well.

  6. This is the fun of tracing your ancestors. When I did mine it took ages as I kept finding new names in the family that I'd never heard of.

It is possible that the Churchill you found could be part of "the" Churchill family, but the only way you'll confirm it is by tracing forwards on later censuses for Hanover Sq district. She may be on the 1861 census.
