I'd like to make curtains for my skylights....it gets very hot with the sun and it's also very bright. Anyone have any ideas on material I could use to detract the heat? I don't want to use a completely black material....TOO dark....but I'd like a material to keep it cool in here. Thanks in advance

  1. Get some material that you like and hold it up in the store to see how much you can see through it. Measure the skylight and cut the material at least twice the width and 3 " longer. Fold the ends over 1 1/2" and sew a pockets for a spring loaded rod to go through on both ends. Let's say your skylight is 24" x 48". Purchase about 1 1/2 yards and just fold both ends in until you have 48" for the length and sew to form a pocket for the rod to fit through. You won't have to do anything with the selvage edges. If the sky light is really long I would fold it in the middle and form a pocket for another spring loaded rod and then fold the ends in and sew. You would be amazed that even sheers block the heat.
