  1. You don't specify what cruise line you're asking about.  The different lines appeal to different passenger demographics.

Carnival is known as the "fun cruise" line, although they've been trying to tone down the "party-til-you-puke" image in recent years and are actually pretty nice for the money.  Royal Caribbean has climbing walls, etc, and appeals to families and young people.  Some people love NCL, although their quality is probably the lowest of the major cruise lines in terms of food and service, from what I've read and heard from passengers.

Princess appeals to a wide range of ages and has plenty of activities with a bit more "upscale" feel than the three mentioned above.

Celebrity and Holland America generally appeal to an older passenger group, although you'll certainly find families on board, especially in the summer or at holiday time.  Their quality is very high for a "mass-market" cruise and their activity level is lower.  The ships are beautiful and very tastefully decorated, as opposed to the "Vegas glitz" found on some of the lower-priced lines [especially Carnival].

Above these, you have the "luxury" lines which appeal to people who can afford much higher costs for a more luxurious, usually truly all-inclusive cruise.

I suggest you get a book at your library or bookstore about cruising, in order to get a general idea of what's involved.  Or, you could go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Reviews" or "Cruise Styles" and you can read about the differences in the various cruise lines.

Cruising is a great way to travel for a relatively modest price, but it's not for everyone.

  2. Well, you didn't say what cruise line you were going on. That makes a difference. Like crystal cruises is differentially for the more sophisticated and Holland America cater to the older crowd. I like Princess for it's all around ages, but if you go cruising during the school season, then don't expect many kids on board. Besides, fun is what you make of it. I'm 59 years old, but I do lots of things that the young set do like skiing, bicycling, hiking, horse back riding, etc.
