I was not satisfied with PCB’s policy about team selection, says http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Waqar-Younis-Maitla-c96193 – Cricket News Update
Former Pakistani skipper, Waqar Younis, has expressed serious reservations over Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) selection policy during his stint as the head coach of the national side.
He insisted that he was not happy with the selection criteria and power given to him as the mentor of the crew.
The former fast bowler recently resigned from the post, following personal and health issues.
At the moment, Waqar is shouldering his responsibilities as a commentator during the ongoing series between Pakistan and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/United-Arab-Emirates-c3033 (UAE).
Recalling his experience of working with the Men in Green, Waqar said, "My idea is that the coach should be able to finalise the playing eleven but in Pakistan cricket this is not the way the system works."
Waqar’s tussle with then http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 tour - slammed the coach publicity for his interference.
Following a heavy altercation between the two big guns, PCB sacked Afridi, who subsequently announced his retirement from International cricket.
Pakistan’s recent trip to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045 was Waqar’s last outing as the coach. It was learnt that the disagreement over selection matters was the biggest reason behind Waqar’s conflict with Afridi and PCB.
While Waqar is now working as a commentator, Afridi is eying a comeback, deciding to come out of retirement a few days ago.
When asked about Afridi’s return, the great pacer shared that even though the decision rests entirely on the selection committee, the player must be asked to prove his form at the First Class level before being selected for national duties.
"It's up to the selectors either they give him a chance or not. But personally I believe that if a player has not played international cricket for a while he needs to prove himself at the domestic level," added the 39-year-old who remained a phenomenal performer
for the country during his International career from 1989 to 2003.
Talking about his successor, the legendary paceman reiterated that the cricket administrators should pick any local guy as the head coach, as it will help players and the mentor establish an understanding quickly.
