I was parking in a lot and I accidently bumped this lady's car. I bumped the car so softly that you couldn't

even tell that I bumped it. It didn't even look like a car door hit it, let along my car. She just wanted some money, I guess. But anyway, I got a report from the police and the damage is circled as (none) on my car and hers. Will I have to pay for the damage (which is not visible)?

  1. Police officer says there is no damage.   Tell her to "kiss off".    With that report in hand,  she will now have to prove damage was done.

If not a digital camera,   keep one of the cheap "throw-away"  cameras in your glove box or under the seat.     Your insurance company will love you for it.

  2. I'm sorry you had an accident in the parking lot.  I assume it was your fault because you said "I accidentally bumped this lady's car."

Even though there was no obvious damage to you, she felt there was.  If you had not bumped her, she would have nothing to complain about.  However, since this was not her fault, I don't see why she should have to be damaged at all (even a minuscule amount).

Morally, I'd say you are responsible for putting her car in the same condition it was immediately before you bumped her.  I suggest you offer to pay for a body shop to repair whatever damage there was after she has provided you with an estimate.

It would be nice if she were to say "Oh, never mind, it's really not that big a deal", but some people are just not like that.  I think it's up to you to be the bigger person and take the high road.

On the other hand, if you refuse to pay for the damage, she will have to proceed in some action against you if she wants to collect.  If the damage is less than her deductible, the insurance company won't come after you and it will have to be her action in small claims court.  She may decide it's not worth the hassle.

  3. I Would have to say no. but you should notify your insurance co. just in case she doe's file something with her's.

  4. Very good job on getting the police report and this will be good for your protection and as for paying anything, just let the insurance companies fight it out.

  5. What exactly did she want fixed if there was no visible damage? To get anything from you in court she would have to produce some evidence of the damage and how much it would cost to fix. She can't just tell you (or your insurance company, you have called the right?) "Give me $300" without some justification.

  6. if it is not visibly damaged don't worry about it.

Many bumpers today have structural foam in them that could be damaged and not externally visible. She could always come back at you on that.

  7. If there's absolutely no damage, then there's nothing to fix, so you don't have to worry about it.  No harm, no foul.  Sounds like the lady is just being a b*tch.
