I was reading about the pill, is this true? ?

I was reading a BBC article and there's a quote from the organisation called Life that said this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/884364.stm

<A spokesman for the pro-family charity Life suggested the pill was responsible for a rise in sexually transmitted diseases.

"The pill is not a contraceptive. It causes early abortion and women are being conned about what they are doing to their body<<

I was wondering if it's true that the pill causes early abortion? I thought it prevented an egg being released, so how can it cause early abortion? If their quite is untrue, it seems irresponsible for them to say it.

  1. well im not a dr. or anything but i know many people who have gotten prg. while taking birth control pills, so that goes to say that it doesnt always keep your body from releasing eggs. further more i have HEARD that if you do conceive while on birth control it CAN cause a miscarriage. so not totaly sure but i think it is a possibility to abord.

  2. Oral contraceptives do not always prevent ovulation and fertilization. If an egg is fertilized, it usually cannot implant because the endometrium (uterine lining) is very thin and not hospitable. In those cases, early spontaneous abortion does occur.

Having said that, though...taking the pill responsibly and correctly will prevent ovulation almost 100% of the time. And condoms should always be used because you don't know who the other person has been with. The only other option is abstinence - the smartest choice by far for those who are not married and don't want to have kids.

  3. I think they mean the morning after pill

  4. Its not true. that is just a quote from the woman representing a pro-life group that the newspaper is reporting on. she may be saying this because the pill usually prevents the egg from being released but if the egg is released and fertilized, it prevents it from implanting and some people consider this an abortion. Its a very extreme position to take, but its the spokesperson's opinion.

The newspaper isn't saying this is true, its reporting someone's story, and it quotes the person, thereby indicating to us, the audience that it is something someone said and not necessarily fact.

  5. You're absolutely right that birth control pills prevent an egg from being releases. Without an egg to be fertilized, there can't be a pregnancy. And without a pregnancy, there can't be an abortion. However, there's something called the "morning after" pill, which is used after somebody has had s*x WITHOUT contraceptive protection. Here's some information about the morning-after pill.

The active ingredients in morning-after pills are similar to those in birth control pills, except in higher doses. Some morning-after pills contain only one hormone, levonorgestrel (Plan B), and others contain two, progestin and estrogen. Progestin prevents the sperm from reaching the egg and keeps a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus (implantation). Estrogen stops the ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation) that can be fertilized by sperm.

In any case, the statement that "the pill is not a contraceptive" is a blatant lie and if I were you, I wouldn't pay too much attention to fanatics.

  6. The pill encourages immorality- thus the spread of disease. People think they're safe frome verything, just because they;re safe from pregnancy.

Yes the pill causes eggs NOT to be released- but in the event that you do get pregnant, it can keep the egg from attaching (mostly this is only true with IUD's though)

  7. Firstly STIs were rife way before the pill was invented. Secondly it works mainly by inhibiting ovulation, however it also produces cervical mucous hostility, preventing implantation.
